A year of events to remember
Our events committee managed to outdo themselves yet again with a number of wonderfully successful fundraisers throughout the year.
In May the committee treated us to a little bit of autumn sparkle with our annual lunch at the Kooyong Tennis club. Hosted by Children First Ambassadors and Radio Personalities Dee Dee Dunleavy and Peter ‘Grubby’ Stubbs the lunch was a wonderful afternoon. We were treated to a talk by guest speaker Professor Andrew Heggie Head of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery at the Royal Children’s Hospital of Melbourne. Many of the children were able to join us for the afternoon and Kiko was particularly pleased to be able to attend and present Professor Heggie – one of his treating doctors – with a thank you gift. The event, auction and raffle raised a wonderful amount which enabled us to purchase both a hoist and adapted wheel chair to allow all our kids easy access to the physio pool.
Later that month we were extraordinarily grateful to be generously hosted by Ms Jeanne Pratt AC at her private residence, Raheen for a cocktail evening. The glamorous event was held as a fundraiser for Jack from Vanuatu who needed surgery for a naso-frontal encephalocele. Professor Anthony Holmes AO, who led the team caring for Jack, was present to explain the complexities of Jack’s condition to our guests.
We returned to the Park Hyatt for our annual Gala Ball in October, the evening was a huge success with a wonderful time had by all. Our guests were surprised by opera singers hidden in the audience, enchanted by the angelic voice of Amalia Foy, got in to the swing of things with a Rat Pack / Sinatra selection from our multi-talented MC David Malek and The Boys in the Band were a fantastic finale to the evening.
Perhaps the most impressive “act of the night” were our 3 amazing speakers; neurosurgeon Alison Wray, Maxillofacial surgeon Jonathon Burge and friend of the foundation Professor Tony Holmes Craniofacial surgeon. We were incredibly lucky to gain the sponsorship of Abercrombie and Kent Australia for the event this year who donated a once-in-a-life-time African safari for our live auction.
In the run up to the festive season we have held 2 wonderful events up at the Retreat. The first to thank our tireless volunteers and the second to thank our long term supporters and major donors. These very special groups of people are really crucial in allowing Children First Foundation to help as many children as we do, without them none of this would be possible. We hosted these wonderful people up at the Retreat over 2 weekends where they were treated to a country style morning tea and a BBQ lunch.
We look forward to more events in 2019 and can’t wait to see what our wonderful committee has up their sleeves for our 20th anniversary ball – it’s sure to be unmissable!
