Rehab at the Retreat celebration
Almost 100 guests joined us when Councillor Rhonda Sanderson, Mayor of Mitchell Shire, officially launched our Rehab at the Retreat program. This event was a wonderful celebration after many months of hard work on the part of so many generous people.
Mayor Sanderson congratulated all involved in renovating the pool and the construction and fitting out of the physio room. The event was held during Volunteer Week and she also paid tribute to the contribution of volunteers at the Retreat and in the community. Our own volunteers were on hand to help prepare the Retreat for the event and organised the catering for the guests. Kiko from Indonesia welcomed guests to the Retreat and Alma, Foyok and Serah from PNG assisted the Mayor in cutting the ribbon.
The existing pool has been completely renovated thanks to a generous donation from the Priceline Sisterhood Foundation. It now has a retractable dome enabling it to be used year round, and there’s an enclosed walkway to the physio room. The surrounding area has been upgraded, the fencing relocated and non-slip surfaces have been installed. A hoist to safely lower children into the pool was the one remaining item on our pool wish list and we thank the guests at our annual Sparkling Lunch for making this wish come true!
Through a grant from the UPS Foundation, we now have a dedicated Physiotherapy room which has been constructed adjacent to the living and dining room areas of the Retreat. Being part of the house it allows for additional physio sessions and provides privacy if this is required for cultural reasons. The Retreat office has been relocated to space provided in the room to enable staff to keep an eye on physio while attending to administration. Funds for the physio equipment were raised at a fundraising dinner sponsored by Woody Suwan at Suwan Thai Restaurant.
