In late June we launched an upgraded English as an Alternative Language (EAL) program. Ensuring that the children continue their education while they are with us, has always been a strong focus. We are constantly looking for ways to enhance the program and to increase future opportunities for our children. The ability to speak, write and comprehend English is a valuable asset for them, opening up avenues for employment and
further education.

Regular volunteer, Lorraine Aitken and board member Dr Sue English, have worked closely with Will and Elaine Rotor, two experts in EAL, to develop an initial four-week program. The program will be implemented weekly by our volunteer teachers. The focus is to keep the lessons short and fun for the kids (and their parents, if they’d like to join in). Will and Elaine generously provided a demo lesson as well as resources such as USBs with listening exercises, and learning packs for the kids which included laminated word cards.

Feedback from the launch day was that everyone had a great time. As you can see, the kids were smiling the whole time and there was something for everyone to learn.

If you have any expertise you think would be useful and of interest to the Children First crew, please contact our Volunteer Coordinator Judy – volunteer@childrenfirstfoundation.org.au

Academic pathways won’t be the right fit for all our kids, so we are always on the look out for individuals with alternative and fun skills to share.
