It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Children First Foundation Patron, long-time supporter and dear friend, Bernie Lamers AM. Bernie passed away peacefully early Friday morning, surrounded by his beloved family.

Together with his devoted wife and fellow Patron Gerry, his commitment to the Foundation and love for the children was unwavering.

Supporting the Foundation from the very start – Bernie’s contribution was extraordinary. His involvement began over 20 years ago with Rotary Club of Preston and Rotary International District 9790 when he was a key figure in the construction of “the farm” in Kilmore, now known as The Retreat.

Over the next two decades, he continued to be the ‘go-to’ person for all forms of advice involving tradesmen, building repairs and development both at The Retreat and the North Melbourne support office.

Bernie also managed significant projects like the entire ‘Rehab at The Retreat Project’ which included the construction and equipping of the Physio Room, development of the swimming pool and renovations to the internal bathrooms.

More recently, Bernie oversaw the upgrades to The Retreat to comply with current building regulations.

Over the years, together with Gerry, Bernie continued to be a very generous and supportive friend of Children First Foundation. Bernie was often heard saying he and Gerry did everything as one – “we are joined at the hip”.

Our thoughts are with Gerry and the rest of Bernie’s family.

Rest in peace, Bernie. You will be sorely missed.
